Crossing Gibraltar began as Cahoots’ outreach program for our production of The Sheep and the Whale in February 2007, during which five graduates from the training program for young refugees performed as the Chorus. Rather than presenting a group of actors telling the story of refugees, we wanted to integrate those with real-life experience.
Highlights of the program include:
This is Our Crossing (2008)
Participating youth developed and toured a production to newcomer centres across the GTA
Crossing Gibraltar To Go (2008)
30 Rohingya youth participated in workshops in Kitchener, ON; Youth Leasers received leadership training at Elora Gorge
Crossing Gibraltar Mae Lah Oon (2008)
25 Burmese and Karen youth received theatre training from a variety of theatre professionals
Crossing Gibraltar March Break: Land (2009)
In partnership with Native Earth Performing Arts, refugee and newcomer youth were mentored by First Nations artists
