REGENT PARK ARTS & CULTURAL CENTRE

The Regent Park Arts & Cultural Centre represents a unique opportunity to anchor culture as a primary driver in the community’s revitalization, both physically and symbolically. The integration and celebration of Regent Park’s cultural richness in the revitalization will play a central role in its success, and in the creation of a socially inclusive, livable, healthy, safe and vibrant neighbourhood.
Under the leadership of Native Earth Performing Arts, Cahoots Theatre Company,
fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company and Kaha:wi Dance will be resident companies in the RPACC studio space. As a group, we are all committed to exploring and expressing the ethnocultural roots that underlie North American society, and that are exemplified in Toronto. For us, this means that we will finally have a full-scale theatre to call home, in a neighbourhood that is particularly well-suited to our mandate.
RPACC is a platform for cultural exchange and collaboration rooted in Regent Park and open to the world. It is a place where people come to be inspired, to learn, to share, to create. RPACC is:
• A showcase for artistic talent
• An incubator of creative people and organizations
• A workshop for new artistic creations
• The social heart of the Regent Park Revitalization
CAHOOTS STUDIO
In December 2010, Cahoots moved into a studio near Queen and Parliament. In order to turn our new home into a high tech studio theatre, we will be renovating, as well as purchasing state-of-the-art lighting, sound and projection equipment. This studio will be an asset to the entire Toronto performing arts community, but especially to smaller companies with limited access to space and equipment. It will allow us to present works in progress, integrate technology into the development process, and easily produce works for a small audience.
“As an independent producer, we rely on the support of our colleagues in the community to make big things possible. Toronto is hungry for the space that Cahoots would provide.”
- Donna-Michelle St. Bernard, New Harlem Productions“Without the assistance of Cahoots, smaller theatre companies would falter, as there is a definite lack of affordable and accessible rehearsal space in Toronto, which limits our ability to progress artistically.”
- Renna Reddie, Carlos Bulosan Theatre“Cahoots Theatre’s new space can create a platform for the kinds of exciting and unexpected innovations that are key features of a creative city.”
- Jacoba Knaapen, TAPA“The impact of this studio will be huge. This space would finally allow us the opportunity to produce our work in a venue without worrying about finding large enough audiences to fill the house. As a culturally diverse company without our own venue, we are frequently relegated to the end of the list of available spaces and dates.”
- Soheil Parsa, Modern Times Stage Company“…An option such as this would be invaluable to our core programming, and would allow us to better serve our artists and audiences.”
- David Yee, fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company
